Pablo vs Killa: same maker, different hit

Two Danish extra strong brands from the same factory, compared on strength range, flavour, Dry lines, bundles and who each one actually suits.

Quick answer: Pick Killa if you want a reliable 16.5mg slim pouch and do not want to think about strength again. Pick Pablo if you want a choice of strengths, from Silver at 10mg up to Exclusive at 50mg. Both are made by N.G.P. Tobacco in Denmark, both cost £4.29 a tin, and the flavour lists overlap a lot.

People treat these as rivals. They are closer to siblings. The pouch material, the moisture, the slim shape and most of the flavour recipes come from the same place. What differs is how each brand is organised, and that is what should decide it for you.

Same factory, different idea

Pablo and Killa are both N.G.P. Tobacco brands. Pablo came first and built its name on being very strong. Killa followed as the slightly more approachable sibling, though "approachable" here still means 16.5mg, which is X-Strong by our bands.

Pablo is organised by strength. Each line has a name and a number: Silver Edition at 10mg, Gold Edition at 17mg, Red, Ice Cold and X Ice Cold at 30mg, Exclusive at 50mg. You choose the line, then the flavour.

Killa is organised by flavour. Almost everything is 16.5mg. You choose the flavour and the strength takes care of itself. The only exceptions are the Dry and Mini lines at 16mg.

Strength: Pablo has a ladder, Killa has a floor

Pablo Silver at 10mg is the one line in either brand that sits below the X-Strong band. It is where someone used to an 11mg ZYN or VELO should start with Pablo, and it is a sensible tin in its own right. Gold at 17mg is a hair above Killa. Red and the Ice Cold tins at 30mg are a big jump. Exclusive at 50mg is the strongest thing we sell under either name and only for people who already use 30mg.

Killa at 16.5mg is a single, well-judged strength. If you have tried a 12mg or 13.5mg pouch and want a bit more, it is the obvious next rung. If 16.5mg is too much, Killa has nowhere lower to send you, and that is the brand's weakness.

Our extra strong band page lists everything from both brands at 12mg and above.

Flavours: mostly shared, with a few exclusives each

Both brands lean sweet and cold. Mint, frosted mint, cola, blue raspberry, grape ice, kiwi, pear, passion fruit, banana ice, mango ice, strawberry kiwi, strawberry lychee, tropical punch, bubblegum, lemonade, orange and liquorice all appear in both ranges at some strength.

Where they split:

  • Killa has the coffee flavours. Cappuccino and White Coffee at 16.5mg are both in stock and both unusual. Pablo Exclusive Mocca at 50mg is the only Pablo coffee.
  • Killa has Apple, Melon, Energy and Watermelon as straight flavours. Pablo pairs watermelon with lemon or strawberry instead.
  • Pablo has the plain, unflavoured-feeling Red line at 30mg and a Dark Cherry at both 17mg and 50mg.
  • Pablo Exclusive has the widest sweet range: Strawberry Cheesecake, Pink Lemonade, Sour Blueberries, Blueberry Peach Ice and Cherry Cola.

If flavour is the deciding factor, Killa Exclusive Double Mint (the brand's best seller) and Pablo Gold Frosted Mint are the two tins to compare side by side. Same price, half a milligram apart, same slim pouch.

The Dry lines

Both brands make a Dry version. Pablo Dry comes at 30mg (Red, Ice Cold, X Ice Cold). Killa Dry comes at 16mg across nine flavours including Cold Mint, Mango Ice and Blueberry.

A dry pouch releases nicotine more slowly, drips less and lasts longer. For a 30mg Pablo that makes a real difference: the first five minutes are less brutal and the pouch keeps going well past the hour. For Killa, the Dry line is the one to choose if you find the standard moist pouch too fast.

Be aware that both Dry lines go in and out of stock. The standard moist tins are the ones that are always there. Read our dry vs moist pouches page if you are not sure which you want.

Price and bundles

A tin of either brand is £4.29. The saving is in the bundles, and here Pablo's five-packs are the better deal right now.

  • Killa Exclusive Variety 10-pack: £19.99, or £2.00 a tin.
  • Killa Flavour Mix 10-pack: £19.99, or £2.00 a tin.
  • Killa Cold Mint 20-pack: £39.99, or £2.00 a tin.
  • Pablo Exclusive 50mg 5-pack: £5.99, or £1.20 a tin.
  • Pablo Silver 10mg 5-pack: £5.99, or £1.20 a tin.
  • Pablo Silver 10mg 9-pack: £19.99, or £2.22 a tin.
  • Pablo Gold 17mg Five Flavour Fusion 5-pack: £5.99, or £1.20 a tin.

The Pablo five-packs at £1.20 a tin are the cheapest way to buy either brand while they are in stock. If you know you want 16.5mg mint and nothing else, the Killa 20-pack at £2.00 a tin is the best value Killa buy. Our best nicotine pouch bundles guide goes through the full list.

Our verdict

Killa is the better brand for most people reading this, because 16.5mg is the strength most heavy users actually want and Killa does it in more flavours at a lower bundle price. The pouch is consistent, the mints are good and you will not accidentally buy something twice as strong as you meant to.

Pablo is the better brand if you need the ladder. Silver at 10mg for a regular day, Gold at 17mg when you want more, and the 30mg tins kept for when nothing else works. Nobody needs the 50mg Exclusive, but if you are going to buy it, Pablo is the only one of the pair that makes it.

Neither is for beginners. If you are new to pouches, nothing in this guide is your first tin. Start with the best nicotine pouches for beginners.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pablo stronger than Killa?

It depends on the line. Pablo Silver at 10mg is weaker than Killa. Pablo Gold at 17mg is about the same. Pablo Red, Ice Cold and Exclusive at 30mg and 50mg are much stronger than anything Killa makes.

Are Pablo and Killa made by the same company?

Yes. Both are N.G.P. Tobacco brands, made in Denmark. The pouch material and many of the flavour recipes are shared, which is why a Killa Cola and a Pablo Gold Cola taste so similar.

Which has the better mint?

Killa, narrowly. Exclusive Double Mint and Cold X Mint at 16.5mg are the two best mints across both brands. Pablo Gold Frosted Mint is close. Pablo Exclusive Frosted Mint at 50mg is a different proposition because the nicotine burn gets in the way of the flavour.

Can I buy Pablo and Killa in a mixed bundle?

Not currently. The bundles are single-brand. The Killa Flavour Mix 10-pack is the closest thing to a mixed box.
