VELO strength guide: from Mini to Max

VELO's UK range runs from a 4mg mini to an 11mg slim, with Max above that. Here is every strength, the dot scale and which flavours exist at each level.

Quick answer: VELO Mini is 4mg and 6mg. VELO Slim is 8mg, 10mg and 11mg. VELO Max is 14mg to 17mg but we do not currently list it. The dots on the tin count up with strength. Start at 4mg if you are new, 6mg or 8mg if you smoke or vape, 10mg or 11mg if you are a heavy user. Every tin is £4.29.

VELO is British American Tobacco's pouch brand and the biggest seller in the UK. BAT rebranded the whole range in 2023 with new tin designs, new flavour names and a dot system for strength. If you bought VELO before that, the names have changed but the strengths below are the current ones.

Bundles: the 8mg Variety Pack and the 10mg Fruity Mint Mix are both 10 tins for £29.99.

Mini: 4mg and 6mg

VELO's two lowest strengths come in a mini format. The pouch is small, moist and quick to start, which makes it feel a little more obvious than a ZYN Mini Dry at the same mg.

4mg is VELO's entry point. Bright Spearmint is the clean mint, Tangy Lime and Purple Grape are the fruit options. For a first-timer who already uses nicotine occasionally, 4mg is the right place. For a complete non-user, ZYN's 1.5mg and 3mg tins are gentler.

6mg is the top of the low band and the better first tin for a daily smoker or vaper. Crispy Peppermint is the best mini VELO makes: a crisp, clean peppermint that does not go sweet. Tropical Mango is the fruit alternative.

Slim: 8mg

VELO's slim pouches start at 8mg, in the medium band. This is a popular strength because it is a full step above the minis without being in the strong band. Blueberry Ice and Lime Flame are the mainstays; Smooth Papaya and the McLaren Edition Sweet Papaya are the newer additions. The 8mg Variety Pack is the bundle to buy if you want to try them all.

For a lot of ex-vapers, 8mg is where they settle. It replaces a moderate vaping habit without the kick of a 10mg pouch.

Slim: 10mg and 11mg

10mg is VELO's biggest strength by number of flavours, and it is where the fruit range lives. Mango Ice is one of the best-selling tins on the site. Ruby Berry, Cherry Ice, Peach Ice, Strawberry Ice, Tropical Ice, Icy Berries and Wintry Watermelon cover the rest of the fruit bowl. Mango Flame and Minty Lemon are the slightly odd ones. This is the strong band and it suits heavy smokers and heavy vapers.

11mg is reserved for the two strongest mints: Freezing Peppermint and Peppermint Storm. Same slim pouch, a touch more nicotine, a lot more cold. If you want the strongest VELO we stock, it is one of these.

Where VELO Max fits

BAT makes VELO Max at 14mg to 17mg for people who want an X-Strong pouch from a mainstream brand. We do not list it at the moment, so we cannot give you a price or a flavour list. If you are at 11mg VELO and want more, the honest options are Nordic Spirit Max at 17mg (£4.49, in stock, a softer pouch) or Killa at 16.5mg (£4.29, a moist slim from the Danish extra strong specialists). Both are in our extra strong band.

What the dots on a VELO tin mean

Since the 2023 rebrand, VELO tins carry a row of dots on the front. More filled dots means more nicotine. One dot is 4mg, two is 6mg to 8mg, three is 10mg to 11mg, and Max tins carry four. The dot count is a quick way to compare strength across the shelf, but two dots covers both a 6mg mini and an 8mg slim, so read the mg figure on the side of the tin before you buy. Our guide to what the dots on nicotine pouch tins mean decodes VELO, ZYN and Nordic Spirit side by side.

Which VELO strength should you pick?

  • New to nicotine, or an occasional user: 4mg Mini.
  • Smoke or vape daily, light to moderate: 6mg Mini or 8mg Slim.
  • Smoke 15 or more a day, or vape heavily: 10mg Slim.
  • Want the strongest VELO we stock: 11mg Freezing Peppermint or Peppermint Storm.

VELO's moist pouch starts fast, so a strength that feels right in the first five minutes can feel like too much by minute fifteen. If you are between two strengths, take the lower one. Our nicotine pouch strength guide explains how each band feels across every brand.

Frequently asked questions

What is the strongest VELO?

In our catalogue, Freezing Peppermint and Peppermint Storm at 11mg. BAT also makes VELO Max at 14mg to 17mg, which we do not currently list.

What is the weakest VELO?

Bright Spearmint, Tangy Lime and Purple Grape at 4mg, all in the mini format.

Is VELO 10mg strong?

Yes, by our bands. 10mg sits in the strong band (9mg to 12mg). It suits heavy smokers and vapers and is too much for a first pouch.

Did VELO change its strengths in the rebrand?

The 2023 rebrand changed tin designs, flavour names and the labelling, and introduced the dot system. The underlying strengths stayed in the same bands. Nordic Spirit was not part of the rebrand, despite the two brands being confused online.
