Nicotine pouches by strength
The four strength bands explained in milligrams per pouch, with the dot systems decoded and a straight answer on where to start.

Quick answer: Nicotine pouch strength is printed on the tin in milligrams per pouch. We sort every tin into four bands: low (up to 6mg), medium (6mg to 9mg), strong (9mg to 12mg) and extra strong (12mg and up). Start one band lower than you think you need and move up only if a pouch fades too fast.
This is the sub-hub for strength on S&P. It sits under the nicotine pouches hub and links down to a page for each band, where you will find a table of the tins that fit. Read this page first if the numbers on tins confuse you, which is fair enough, because brands do not make them easy.
What the mg number means
The milligram figure is the amount of nicotine in one pouch. A 6mg ZYN Slim has 6mg of nicotine in it. A 16.5mg Killa has 16.5mg. That is the number we use everywhere on this site, so tins can be compared like for like.
It is not the amount you absorb. Nicotine passes through the gum lining over the 20 to 60 minutes the pouch is in, and only a portion of it ends up in your bloodstream. How much depends on the format, the moisture of the pouch, the pH of the filling and how long you leave it in. That is why a 6mg mini and a 6mg slim can feel quite different, and why there is no neat way to say how many cigarettes a pouch equals. There is a longer answer in our related guides below.
Mg per pouch vs mg per gram
Some brands, especially the extra strong ones, print strength as milligrams per gram of filling rather than per pouch. A tin marked 20mg/g with 0.5g pouches actually holds 10mg per pouch. Others print both, in different sizes. We always convert to per pouch, so when you see 16.5mg on our Killa page, that is what one pouch contains. The full worked examples are in mg per pouch vs mg per gram.
The four strength bands
| Band | Nicotine per pouch | Who it suits | Typical tins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Up to 6mg | New users, light smokers, people stepping down | ZYN 1.5mg, 3mg and 6mg, VELO 4mg and 6mg, Nordic Spirit 6mg, FUMI 4mg, Nicleaf 3mg |
| Medium | 6mg to 9mg | Everyday use, most switchers from ten to twenty a day | VELO 8mg, XQS 8mg, FUMI 8mg, Denssi 8mg, Helwit 7mg, White Fox 8mg |
| Strong | 9mg to 12mg | Regular users, heavier ex-smokers, vapers on 20mg salts | ZYN 9mg and 11mg, VELO 10mg and 11mg, Nordic Spirit 9mg, Pablo Silver 10mg, 77 10.4mg, White Fox 12mg |
| Extra strong | 12mg and up | Experienced users only | ZYN 13.5mg, Killa 16.5mg, Nordic Spirit Max 17mg, Pablo Gold 17mg, CUBA 16mg and 30mg, Siberia 33mg, Pablo Exclusive 50mg |
The cut-offs are ours. Brands use their own words, so VELO calls 10mg "strong" while Killa calls 16mg "extra strong" and Pablo calls 50mg "Exclusive". Our bands put every tin on one scale. A pouch at exactly 6mg sits at the top of low. A pouch at exactly 9mg sits at the top of medium. A pouch at exactly 12mg sits at the top of strong.
The extra strong band is wide because the top end has run away in the last few years. 12mg and 50mg are both extra strong on paper, but a Pablo Exclusive at 50mg has four times the nicotine of a ZYN Blackcurrant Frost at 13.5mg. The extra strong page splits that band into sensible steps.
The dots on the tin
ZYN, VELO and Nordic Spirit all print a strength indicator on the lid alongside, or instead of, a prominent mg number. The thing to know is that these scales are relative to each brand's own range, not to each other.
| Brand | What is on the lid | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| ZYN | A row of filled dots | More dots means stronger within the ZYN range only. The mg per pouch is printed on the tin as well, and that is the figure to trust. |
| VELO | A number next to a strength word such as Medium, Strong or Max | Each number is a step up the VELO range. The mg behind each step differs between the Mini, Slim and Max lines, so read the mg. |
| Nordic Spirit | Dots plus the words Mini, Slim or Max | The dots climb with the mg inside each line. Slim runs 6mg, 9mg and 11mg, Max is 17mg. |
Two dots on a ZYN tin and a "2" on a VELO tin are not the same strength, and the same number of dots can mean a different mg in a mini than in a slim of the same brand. The only number that transfers between brands is the mg per pouch. We go through every tin in what the dots on nicotine pouch tins mean.
If the tin shows dots and no mg figure, or shows a mg/g figure in small print under a big number, treat the strength as unknown until you have checked the brand page. Several fake tins copy the dots but not the strength.
How strength feels
Low pouches tingle lightly for the first few minutes and then settle into a mild, warm background. You will feel calmer rather than buzzed. If you have never used nicotine, even 3mg can make you feel a little odd.
Medium pouches give a clear tingle, sometimes a slight burn on a sensitive gum, and a noticeable lift that lasts 20 to 30 minutes. This is the band most ex-smokers describe as "about right".
Strong pouches arrive quickly and sit heavy. The tingle can be sharp for a minute or two. Regular users like this band because one pouch covers a full hour and does not need topping up.
Extra strong pouches, particularly above 20mg, can bring on sweating, hiccups, light-headedness and nausea in anyone who is not used to them. Those are signs of too much nicotine, not of a good pouch. If it happens, take the pouch out, drink water and wait. A light tingle is normal. Any of the rest is a signal to drop a band.
Moving between bands
Going up is easy and most people do it too fast. Going down takes a bit of planning.
| Move | How to do it | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Low to medium | Swap one or two pouches a day for the next strength up in the same brand and format | Slightly longer satisfaction, maybe a stronger tingle for a few days |
| Medium to strong | Try a slim in the same mg before moving up, then step to 9mg or 10mg | Fewer pouches a day, a heavier feel |
| Strong to extra strong | Only if 11mg or 12mg fades within 20 minutes every time. Start at 13.5mg to 17mg, not at 30mg | More hiccups and sweating until you adjust, if you adjust at all |
| Any band down | Drop one band, or switch to a mini at the same mg first, then drop the mg | A week or two of wanting a second pouch sooner, which passes |
Format is the lever people forget. A 6mg mini feels gentler than a 6mg slim because less material sits on the gum. A 10mg dry pouch feels slower than a 10mg moist pouch because the nicotine takes longer to release. Before changing mg, try the same mg in a different cut. The formats pages under the hub go through mini, slim, large and dry vs moist.
If you are using pouches to come off nicotine altogether, the step-down route runs through the bands in order: strong to medium, medium to low, low to the 1.5mg and 2mg tins from ZYN, Slay and Melta, then stop. The pace that works is one band every three to four weeks. The detail is in how to step down nicotine pouch strength.
Which band should you start in?
| Your habit | Start here | Example tin |
|---|---|---|
| Never used nicotine | Do not start. Nicotine is addictive and there is no benefit. | |
| Social smoker, a few a week | Low, 3mg | ZYN Cool Mint 3mg |
| Up to ten cigarettes a day | Low, 6mg | VELO Crispy Peppermint 6mg |
| Ten to twenty a day | Medium, 8mg | XQS Spearmint 8mg or VELO Blueberry Ice 8mg |
| Twenty or more a day | Strong, 9mg to 10mg | Nordic Spirit Frosty Mint 9mg or VELO Mango Ice 10mg |
| Vaping 20mg nicotine salts all day | Strong, 10mg to 11mg | ZYN Blueberry Mint 11mg |
| Swedish snus user | Strong or extra strong, 12mg to 17mg | White Fox 12mg or Nordic Spirit Max 17mg |
The vaping line surprises people. A 20mg vape delivers nicotine with every puff all day. A single 20mg pouch delivers it in one 40-minute block, so it hits much harder than a vape of the same number. Start at 10mg or 11mg, not 20mg.
Frequently asked questions
What strength nicotine pouch equals one cigarette?
There is no exact match, because absorption from the gum differs from absorption from the lungs. A rough guide used by many switchers is that a 6mg to 8mg pouch covers the craving of one or two cigarettes for most people. Go by how a pouch feels at the 20-minute mark, not by the maths.
Is 20mg a strong nicotine pouch?
Yes. 20mg sits well inside the extra strong band and is for experienced users. It is roughly twice a ZYN 9.5mg and more than three times a VELO 6mg. If you are wondering whether to start there, the answer is no.
Why does the same mg feel different between brands?
Pouch size, moisture, pH and the fibre blend all change how fast nicotine leaves the pouch. A 10mg White Fox (dry, slim) feels sharper and lasts longer than a 10mg VELO (moist, slim). A 6mg mini feels gentler than a 6mg slim. Try two brands at the same mg and you will notice the difference within minutes.
What is the strongest nicotine pouch in the UK?
In the brands we cover, the CUBA Cherry 66mg is the highest number, followed by the 50mg lines from Pablo Exclusive, Garant, NOIS, Iceberg and Dope. These are heavy-user products. The ranked list is in our strongest pouches guide, linked below.
Does strength affect how long a pouch lasts?
Not much. A pouch releases its nicotine over roughly the same 20 to 60 minutes whatever the mg. What changes is how satisfied you feel at the end of that window. A pouch that is too weak feels finished at 15 minutes. One that is right lasts the full session.
