Is 20mg a strong nicotine pouch?

A straight answer on where 20mg sits, who it is for, what it feels like and which tins hit that figure, with the proposed UK cap explained.

Quick answer: Yes, 20mg is a strong nicotine pouch. It sits in the X-Strong band, which starts at 12mg, and it holds more than three times the nicotine of a typical 6mg starter tin. It suits ex-heavy smokers and snus users who have found 12mg to 17mg too soft. It is not a starting strength.

Yes, 20mg is a strong nicotine pouch. On our bands it sits in X-Strong, which starts at 12mg, and it holds more than three times the nicotine of a typical 6mg starter tin. It is a strength for ex-heavy smokers and former snus users who have already tried the 12mg to 17mg range and found it faded too fast. It is not a sensible first tin, and it is not a sensible second one either.

Where 20mg sits on the scale

The four bands run Low (up to 6mg), Medium (6mg to 9mg), Strong (9mg to 12mg) and X-Strong (12mg and above). Most of the big brands stop before 20mg. VELO tops out at 11mg. ZYN tops out at 13.5mg. Killa, the brand most people think of as extra strong, is 16.5mg. Nordic Spirit Max and Pablo Gold are 17mg.

So 20mg is above the strongest tin from every mainstream brand, and it is the entry point for the specialist extra strong ranges. Above it the figures climb fast: 30mg for Pablo Red, 33mg for Siberia, 43mg for Kurwa Max and 50mg for Pablo Exclusive. That makes 20mg a sort of landing between the two groups. Strong enough that nobody should start there, but a sensible ceiling for most heavy users.

What 20mg feels like

If you have come from a 10mg or 11mg tin, a 20mg pouch tingles harder in the first five minutes, and the nicotine builds to a level that you will notice in your chest and head rather than just your mouth. On a moist pouch the first few minutes can sting. On a dry pouch the start is slower and the peak comes later.

For an ex-smoker on 20 or more a day, that peak can feel like the first proper satisfaction since switching. For anyone lighter than that, it tends to feel like too much: a slightly racing pulse, a hot face, a queasy stomach. If that is you, take the pouch out. The feeling passes within half an hour and the lesson is that you belong a band or two lower.

A 20mg pouch does not last longer than a 6mg one. The flavour fades at the same rate and most people take it out after 20 to 40 minutes. What changes is how much nicotine you absorb in that window.

The 77 Ghost Mini line is worth a note. It is a mini pouch at 20mg, which is unusual: minis are normally the gentle format. Because a mini holds less material it delivers a touch more gradually than a 20mg slim, which some users prefer. The rest of the 77 range runs at 5.2mg and 10.4mg, so there is a long way up the brand before Ghost.

Rush is the other brand with a clear ladder to 20mg: Light at 6mg, Pro at 11mg, Extreme at 20mg, all in the same flavours. The full set of tins from 12mg upwards is on the extra strong page.

Who should use 20mg, and who should not

Use 20mg if you have been on 16mg or 17mg for a few weeks, you use one or two pouches a day and want each to carry you further, and you have already ruled out a format change (a moist slim at 16mg can feel stronger than a dry one at 20mg).

Do not use 20mg if you smoke fewer than 20 a day, if you vape and are switching, or if a Strong tin already satisfies you. Stepping up when you do not need to does nothing except make it harder to come back down later. The honest path for most people is to find the lowest strength that stops the craving, which the nicotine pouch strength guide walks through.

Nicotine is addictive. A daily 20mg habit is a bigger one to unwind than a daily 6mg habit. If you are using pouches to get off cigarettes, the aim is the lowest strength that works, not the highest you can take.

20mg and the proposed UK cap

As of October 2026 the Tobacco and Vapes Bill proposes a limit of 20mg of nicotine per pouch for the UK. If that becomes law in its current form, 20mg would be the strongest pouch legally on sale, and the 30mg, 43mg and 50mg tins would have to be reformulated or withdrawn. The tins in the table above would be unaffected. It is a proposal, not current law, and the detail could change. Our guide to the Tobacco and Vapes Bill tracks it.

Frequently asked questions

Is 20mg too strong for a beginner?

Yes. A beginner should start in the Low band, at 3mg to 6mg. 20mg is more than three times that and will make most new users feel unwell.

Is 20mg stronger than Killa?

Yes. Killa Extra Strong and Killa Exclusive are 16.5mg. A 20mg pouch holds about a fifth more nicotine. That said, a moist 16.5mg can feel sharper in the first few minutes than a dry 20mg.

How many cigarettes is 20mg equal to?

There is no exact figure. A cigarette delivers roughly 1mg to 2mg of absorbed nicotine, and a 20mg pouch delivers a good deal more than that over 30 to 60 minutes. See how many cigarettes a nicotine pouch equals.

Will 20mg pouches be banned in the UK?

Not under the current proposal. The Tobacco and Vapes Bill proposes a cap at 20mg per pouch, so 20mg tins would remain legal while anything above would not. As of October 2026 this is proposed, not in force.
