Quick answer: The best low strength nicotine pouches are ZYN Cool Mint at 1.5mg for first-timers, VELO Bright Spearmint at 4mg for a gentle everyday tin, Nordic Spirit Mint at 6mg for ex-smokers who want the top of the band, and FUMI at 4mg if you want to try the format for 99p. Low means 6mg or under on our bands.
Who the Low band is for
Low is for three groups. First-time users who have never used nicotine, or only socially. Light smokers on fewer than ten a day, and vapers on a 10mg liquid. And anyone stepping down from a stronger tin who wants to keep the habit while cutting the dose.
The band runs from 1mg to 6mg, which is a wide spread. A 1.5mg ZYN and a 6mg Nordic Spirit are both Low, but the Nordic Spirit holds four times the nicotine. So within the band, pick by where you are coming from: 1mg to 3mg if you are new, 4mg if you want a noticeable but easy tingle, 6mg if you are an ex-smoker who wants something with a bit of weight to it.

Verdicts
ZYN Cool Mint 1.5mg. The gentlest tin from a major brand, and the one we hand to people who have never used nicotine. The tingle is there but it is soft, the mint is clean and the pouch is a comfortable slim. If 1.5mg does nothing for you after a few days, the same flavour comes at 6mg in the Mini Strong and at 9.5mg as Icy Mint, so you can climb without changing taste. The whole ZYN range runs 1.5mg to 13.5mg.
VELO Bright Spearmint 4mg. The best all-rounder in the band. Four milligrams is enough to feel without being enough to fluster, the spearmint is sweet rather than icy, and VELO's pouch is soft and sits well. Tangy Lime and Purple Grape are the same strength if mint is not your thing.
Nordic Spirit Mint 6mg. The right pick for an ex-smoker who wants to start low but not too low. Nordic Spirit's 6mg is its Regular tier, the pouch is a slightly larger slim, and the mint is cool without being sharp. It costs a little more than most at £4.89, but the same brand runs to 9mg Frosty Mint and 17mg Max if you ever need to move up.
FUMI 4mg at 99p. The cheapest way to find out whether pouches are for you. FUMI's 99p tins at 4mg (Watermelon Mint, Strawberry, Blackcurrant, Chilled Cherry) are a full 20-pouch tin for under a pound. The flavours are sweeter and simpler than ZYN or VELO, but at that price it does not matter. Full-price FUMI minis at 4mg are a good discreet option.
White Fox Mint 4mg. White Fox is known for its 12mg and 16mg tins, but the 4mg Mint Edition Smooth is a proper gentle pouch at £1.99. It has White Fox's signature strong mint flavour without the strong nicotine, so it suits people who want the taste of a heavy tin at a light dose.
Snooze 4mg. A fruit-and-cola range at 4mg (Cola, Raspberry, Grape Strawberry, Tutti Frutti) for anyone who does not want mint. Be careful with the brand: Snooze also sells a 25mg line in Apple, Blueberry and Pineapple that looks similar on the shelf.
MELTA 2mg and Nic Nac 3mg. Two small brands at the very bottom of the scale. MELTA at 2mg comes in seven flavours including Banana and Vanilla. Nic Nac at 3mg has Peppermint, Spearmint, Wintergreen and citrus options. Both are good for anyone who found 1.5mg ZYN a touch too soft but 4mg too much.
Mini or slim at low strength
Format matters more in the Low band than anywhere else, because the doses are small enough that pouch size changes the feel. A 6mg mini (ZYN Mini Strong, FUMI Mini) is a gentler experience than a 6mg slim (Nordic Spirit, VELO), because there is less material against the gum and the release is slower. If you want 6mg but found a slim too much, try a mini at the same strength before dropping to 4mg. Our mini pouch page lists every mini by strength.
When to move up, and when not to
Give any Low tin at least three or four days. The first pouch of a new brand almost always feels stronger than the fifth, because your gum adjusts. If after a few days the pouch does nothing, move to the next step within the brand rather than jumping bands. If it feels too much, drop a step or switch to a mini.
Most light smokers and vapers never need to leave Low. Ex-heavier smokers often start at 6mg and settle in Medium. Nobody needs to start above 6mg, and the low strength page has every tin at 6mg or under so you can shop the band directly.
Frequently asked questions
What is the lowest strength nicotine pouch?
SLAY at 1mg is the lowest we stock, followed by ZYN at 1.5mg and MELTA at 2mg. ZYN Cool Mint 1.5mg is the gentlest tin from a major brand.
Is 6mg a low strength pouch?
Yes, just. Our Low band runs up to 6mg, and 6mg is also the bottom of Medium. A 6mg mini feels Low. A 6mg slim from Nordic Spirit or VELO feels like the top of the band.
Is 4mg enough to replace cigarettes?
For a light smoker on fewer than ten a day, often yes. A cigarette delivers roughly 1mg to 2mg of absorbed nicotine, and a 4mg pouch over half an hour lands in a similar range. Heavier smokers usually want 6mg or above.
Which low strength pouch is best for a beginner?
ZYN Cool Mint 1.5mg if you have never used nicotine, VELO Bright Spearmint 4mg if you have. The best nicotine pouches for beginners guide has a full list.
Can I use low strength pouches to cut down?
Yes, and it is the usual way to do it. Drop one band at a time and keep the pouch count steady. There is a four-week plan in how to step down nicotine pouch strength.
