VELO vs Nordic Spirit

The UK's biggest pouch brand against the one ex-smokers keep settling on, compared on the things that matter when you are choosing a tin.

Quick answer: Pick VELO if you want fruit flavours, a mini format and the widest choice at 8mg to 10mg. Pick Nordic Spirit if you want a softer, smoother slim pouch that lasts longer and a range that runs to 17mg. VELO is £4.29 a tin, Nordic Spirit is £4.49 to £4.89.

These two are the brands most UK switchers end up choosing between after they have tried ZYN. They are both mainstream, both easy to buy genuine, and both sit mostly in the medium and strong bands. The differences are in the pouch itself and in how far the range stretches.

Who makes them

VELO is British American Tobacco's brand. It is the biggest pouch brand in the UK by volume, it is in most petrol stations and supermarkets, and BAT rebranded the whole range in 2023 with new tins, new names and a dot system for strength. Nordic Spirit was not involved in that rebrand, despite what some forum posts say.

Nordic Spirit is Japan Tobacco International's brand, made in Sweden. It launched in the UK before VELO took off and built a following among ex-smokers who wanted something smooth. The range is smaller and changes less often.

Strength: VELO is wider in the middle, Nordic Spirit goes higher

VELO has more rungs between 4mg and 11mg. If you want 8mg, VELO has four flavours at exactly that. Nordic Spirit jumps from 6mg to 9mg with nothing in between, which is fine for most people but annoying if 6mg is too light and 9mg is too much.

Nordic Spirit goes higher. Max Frosty Mint and Max Frosty Berry at 17mg are X-Strong tins and there is nothing in VELO's current UK range to match them. If you think you will want more than 11mg at some point, Nordic Spirit lets you stay with one brand.

Neither goes below 4mg. For a true beginner tin, ZYN's 1.5mg and 3mg Mini Dry pouches are gentler than anything here. Our nicotine pouch strength guide explains where each of these sits.

Format and feel: this is the real difference

VELO pouches are moist and a little firm. The 4mg and 6mg tins are a mini format; 8mg and above are slim. They start quickly, the flavour is strong for the first 15 minutes, and they fade by around 30 to 40 minutes. Some people find the pouch slightly scratchy against the gum, especially the mints.

Nordic Spirit pouches are moist, soft and smooth. The slim pouch feels thinner and more flexible under the lip, it drips less than VELO, and it keeps a milder flavour going for 45 minutes or more. This is the thing people mean when they say Nordic Spirit is "comfortable". It is the best slim pouch of the big three for sitting in all afternoon.

If you want a quick, obvious hit and a pouch you can forget about after half an hour, VELO. If you want a pouch that behaves the same from minute 1 to minute 45, Nordic Spirit. Our slim nicotine pouches page compares the slim formats across brands.

Flavours: VELO has more, Nordic Spirit has fewer but better balanced

VELO's range is fruit-heavy. Mango Ice, Ruby Berry, Cherry Ice, Peach Ice, Strawberry Ice, Tropical Ice, Icy Berries, Wintry Watermelon and Blueberry Ice cover most of the fruit bowl, plus Smooth Papaya and the McLaren Edition Sweet Papaya at 8mg. The mints are Bright Spearmint, Crispy Peppermint, Freezing Peppermint and Peppermint Storm. VELO Mango Ice at 10mg is one of the best-selling tins we stock.

Nordic Spirit keeps it to a dozen or so. Mint, Spearmint, Sweet Mint and Frosty Mint on the mint side. Blueberry, Raspberry, Forest Berries, Frosty Berry, Zesty Pear, Tropical Mix, Melon Fresh and Dark Fizz on the fruit side. None of them are loud. Blueberry at 6mg is the tin a lot of people start on, and Frosty Mint at 9mg is the one they stay on.

If you like to rotate flavours and get bored easily, VELO. If you want one or two flavours done well, Nordic Spirit. For the wider picture, see our nicotine pouch flavours guide.

Price

VELO is 20p to 60p cheaper a tin. Over a tin a week that is £10 to £30 a year, which is not nothing but is not the reason to choose.

On bundles, VELO's 8mg Variety Pack and Fruity Mint Mix are 10 tins for £29.99 (£3.00 a tin). Nordic Spirit's Essential Flavours 10-pack is £26.99 (£2.70 a tin), which flips the result: buy in tens and Nordic Spirit is the cheaper of the two.

Our verdict

For someone switching from smoking, we would point to Nordic Spirit first. The soft slim pouch is the least likely to put you off, 6mg and 9mg cover the first few months, and 17mg is there if you ever need it. The slower, steadier release also suits people replacing a cigarette-every-hour habit.

For someone switching from vaping, VELO is the better match. Vapers are used to flavour up front and a quick hit, and VELO's moist pouch and fruit range deliver exactly that. The 8mg and 10mg tins are where most ex-vapers settle.

If you are undecided, buy one tin of each at the same strength (VELO Crispy Peppermint 6mg against Nordic Spirit Mint 6mg is a fair test) and see which pouch you reach for on day three.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nordic Spirit stronger than VELO?

At the top of the range, yes. Nordic Spirit Max at 17mg is stronger than any VELO tin we stock, which peaks at 11mg. In the middle they are similar: a 9mg Nordic Spirit and a 10mg VELO feel about the same, with the VELO starting a bit faster.

Which lasts longer?

Nordic Spirit. The softer slim pouch keeps a mild flavour and steady release going for 45 minutes or more. VELO tends to be done by 30 to 40 minutes. See how long nicotine pouches last.

Which is better for quitting smoking?

Both work as a replacement. Nordic Spirit's smoother pouch and longer release suit people who want something to sit with for a while. VELO suits people who want a quick hit at set times. Neither is a medicine, and if you want help quitting, the NHS stop smoking service is the place to start.

Do VELO and Nordic Spirit come in mini?

VELO's 4mg and 6mg tins are minis. Nordic Spirit's core range is slim, with mini versions of the mint flavours in the low to medium range. Our best mini nicotine pouches guide covers both.
