White snus vs nicotine pouches
The words white snus get used for two different products. Here is which is tobacco, which is not, and which you can legally buy in the UK.
Quick answer: In the UK, white snus almost always means a tobacco-free nicotine pouch, which is legal to sell to adults 18 and over. In Sweden, white snus can mean white portion tobacco snus, which cannot be sold in the UK. The test is the tin: if it says tobacco-free, it is a nicotine pouch; if the contents are brown, it is tobacco.
This page exists because the phrase causes real confusion, including with people who are sure they know what they are buying. It is part of our snus hub, which covers the product, the brands and the law.
Where the name came from
Swedish snus was brown and moist for 200 years. In the late 1990s makers introduced the white portion: the same tobacco in a dry, uncoloured bag that drips less and starts more slowly. Swedes called it vitt snus, white snus, to tell it apart from original portions. Our page on the types of snus explains the difference in detail.
Then, in the 2010s, the same makers launched tobacco-free pouches. These were white all the way through, before and after use, because there was no tobacco to stain anything. Marketing leaned on the word white, and some tins carried "all white". The products reached the UK from around 2019, and British users, who had never seen a tobacco white portion, started calling them white snus, or simply snus.
So one phrase now covers two products, and only one of them is legal to sell here.
White snus vs nicotine pouches side by side
| White portion snus (Sweden) | Nicotine pouch (UK) | |
|---|---|---|
| Contains tobacco | Yes | No |
| What is inside | Ground tobacco in a dry white bag | Nicotine on plant fibre, flavouring, water |
| Colour after use | Bag goes beige or brown | Stays white |
| Nicotine label | mg per gram | mg per pouch |
| Taste | Tobacco, bergamot, sometimes mint | Mint, fruit, citrus, coffee, cola |
| Legal to sell in the UK | No | Yes, 18 and over |
| What UK users call it | Snus | Snus, white snus, pouches, nics |
The colour-after-use row is the quickest test if you have a used portion in front of you. Tobacco leaks pigment; plant fibre does not.
Three ways to tell what you are holding
- Read the tin. Every tobacco-free pouch sold legitimately in the UK says tobacco-free, nicotine pouches or similar on the label. Tobacco snus says snus and lists tobacco in the contents.
- Look at the contents. Pouches are white or off-white and dry. Snus is brown, even inside a white bag, and moist.
- Check the strength label. Pouches give mg per pouch, usually a round number such as 6mg, 9mg or 12mg. Snus gives mg per gram, and may say "regular", "strong" or "extra strong" instead of a number. Our guide on mg per pouch vs mg per gram explains why the two scales are not interchangeable.
If the tin arrived from a marketplace seller with no clear labelling, treat it with suspicion on both counts: it may be tobacco, and it may be fake. Our guide on how to spot fake nicotine pouches covers the signs.
Which one can you buy in the UK?
Only the nicotine pouch. Tobacco snus of any colour, white portion included, has been banned from sale in the UK since 1992, and the ban survived Brexit as retained law. Tobacco-free pouches contain no tobacco, so the ban does not apply and they are sold to adults aged 18 and over. Our guide on whether snus is legal in the UK goes through the detail, including what happens if you bring tobacco snus back from Sweden for your own use (not an offence, but you cannot sell it on).
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill, going through Parliament through 2025 and 2026, is set to put a legal minimum age of 18 on pouches and give ministers powers over strength, flavours and display. As of October 2026 those powers are proposals or still being written into regulations, so check the latest before relying on anything you read, here or elsewhere.
Does a nicotine pouch feel like white snus?
Close, and closer than most people expect. Both are dry, slim portions that sit under the top lip and release slowly with little drip. The differences are:
- Taste. Pouches have no tobacco base, so the flavouring is the whole taste. Mint dominates; the nearest thing to a Swedish flavour profile is an unflavoured or tobacco-flavour pouch.
- Onset. Pouches tend to tingle for the first few minutes and come on a little faster than a white portion.
- Strength scale. A regular Swedish white portion holds about 8mg of nicotine in a 1g portion. UK pouches are commonly sold at 6mg, 9mg, 12mg and up, per pouch, and extra strong lines go past 20mg. A switcher should start a band lower than they expect.
If you want the full comparison of the two product types rather than the naming, our snus vs nicotine pouches guide covers contents, feel and flavour, and the range itself is on our nicotine pouches hub.
Why the confusion matters
Two reasons beyond pedantry. First, the law. Someone selling "white snus" online in the UK could be selling tobacco, which is illegal, and a buyer who does not check the tin may not realise. Second, strength. People who think a 12mg pouch is "the same as Swedish regular" because both are white tend to buy too strong. Knowing which product you have, and which strength scale it uses, is the difference between a pleasant first tin and one that sits in a drawer.
Frequently asked questions
Is white snus tobacco-free?
In the UK, usually yes, because the phrase is used for nicotine pouches. In Sweden, white snus means a white portion of tobacco snus, which is not tobacco-free. Read the tin: it will say tobacco-free if it is.
Is white snus legal in the UK?
Tobacco-free nicotine pouches, which is what most UK users mean by white snus, are legal to sell to adults 18 and over. White portion tobacco snus is not legal to sell in the UK. Possessing it is not an offence.
Is VELO white snus?
VELO is a tobacco-free nicotine pouch. Some people call it white snus, and the brand has snus heritage, but it contains no tobacco. The same is true of ZYN, Nordic Spirit and the rest of the UK pouch market.
Which is stronger, white snus or nicotine pouches?
Neither is stronger by definition; it depends on the line. A regular Swedish white portion holds about 8mg per gram, and UK pouches run from under 2mg to over 20mg per pouch. Compare the actual nicotine per portion, not the colour, and start low.
