Snus vs nicotine pouches: what's the difference?

One contains tobacco, one does not, and that single fact changes the law, the taste, the staining and where you can buy it.

Quick answer: The difference is tobacco. Snus is moist ground tobacco from Sweden, sold loose or in portion bags. A nicotine pouch is tobacco-free, made from plant fibre, nicotine, water and flavouring. Both sit under the top lip, but only the tobacco-free pouch can legally be sold in the UK, and only snus stains.

What snus is

Snus is a Swedish oral tobacco. The tobacco is ground, salted, moistened and heat treated rather than fermented, then packed either loose in a tin or into small portion bags. Portions come in original (brown, moist), white (drier surface, slower release) and all-white (bleached, less staining, still tobacco). It has been part of Swedish life for two centuries and remains legal there under an exemption from the EU oral tobacco ban. What a nicotine pouch is

A nicotine pouch looks like a white snus portion and sits in the same place, but there is no tobacco leaf in it. The filler is plant fibre (usually cellulose), carrying nicotine salt, water, flavouring, sweetener and a pH adjuster. Because there is no tobacco, the product falls outside the UK oral tobacco ban and can be sold to adults 18 and over. Brands such as White Fox, ZYN, VELO and Pablo are all tobacco-free. Moisture and drip. Original snus is wet and tends to drip, which is why many Swedes spit. Most nicotine pouches are drier and produce less saliva, so you swallow normally. A handful of pouch brands sell a deliberately moist format, and we compare them in dry vs moist pouches.

Nicotine delivery. Tobacco-free pouches often use nicotine salts and release faster than snus of a matching strength. If you are moving from Swedish snus to pouches, start a step lower than you expect.

Taste and feel

Snus tastes of tobacco first. The classic Swedish profile is earthy and slightly salty, sometimes with bergamot, juniper or a smoky note. Flavoured snus exists, but tobacco is always underneath.

Nicotine pouches have no tobacco to work around, so the flavour is the whole point. Mint and spearmint dominate the UK market, followed by berry, citrus, cola and coffee. Pouch size and texture also differ. Swedish portions are often large and soft. Most UK pouches are slim, which sits flatter under the lip and shows less.

Legality and where to buy

In the UK, tobacco snus cannot be sold by any shop or website. The 1992 oral tobacco ban was kept in UK law after Brexit. Possessing it or bringing a personal amount back from Sweden is not an offence, but you will not find it legitimately for sale here. Tobacco-free nicotine pouches are legal to sell to adults aged 18 and over. As of October 2026 they are covered by general product safety rules, with the Tobacco and Vapes Bill bringing in an age of sale of 18 and new powers over strength, flavours and packaging. Check the latest status before you rely on it.

In practice, that means a UK retailer offering "snus" is selling tobacco-free pouches. That is true of every tin on this site. Anyone advertising genuine Swedish tobacco snus for UK delivery is either mislabelling pouches or breaking the law.

Which one should you choose?

If you live in the UK the decision is mostly made for you. Nicotine pouches are the product you can legally buy, and they give a similar under-the-lip experience with a wider flavour range and less staining.

If you came to pouches from snus, pick a plainer flavour and a strength one band below what you used. Someone used to a Swedish strong portion at around 12mg per gram will usually be fine on an 8mg to 10mg pouch. Someone used to regular portions should start in the medium band. Stronger is not better, and tobacco-free delivery can catch you out.

Frequently asked questions

Is a nicotine pouch the same as snus?

No. They look similar and sit in the same place, but snus contains ground tobacco and a nicotine pouch does not. The law, the taste and the staining all follow from that.

Is VELO snus?

No. VELO is a tobacco-free nicotine pouch. The same is true of ZYN, Nordic Spirit, Pablo and every other brand sold legally in the UK.

Why is snus banned but pouches are not?

The UK ban covers tobacco for oral use. A nicotine pouch has no tobacco in it, so the ban does not reach it. Pouches are regulated under separate consumer rules instead.

Do nicotine pouches feel weaker than snus?

Often the opposite. Many pouches use nicotine salts that release quickly, so a 10mg pouch can hit harder and faster than a snus portion with a similar label. Start lower.

Can I buy real Swedish snus online in the UK?

Not legally from a UK seller. Importing a personal amount for your own use is not an offence, but tobacco duty rules apply and the amounts must look personal.
