Nicotine pouch formats

Format changes the feel of a pouch more than flavour does. Here is what mini, slim, large and dry actually mean, with the tins that use each.

Quick answer: Nicotine pouches come in three sizes, mini, slim and large, and two moisture levels, dry and moist. Slim is the UK standard at roughly 0.5g to 0.8g a pouch with about 20 to a tin. Minis are smaller and more discreet, large pouches are the old Swedish snus size, and dry pouches release slower and last longer than moist ones.

Most people never think about format. They buy a brand, find it too subtle or too bulky, and change strength when they should have changed size. This page is the fix. It explains each format, lists which brands use which, and links to a deeper page on every one.

Weights and counts are typical ranges across the brands we stock, not a rule. Two slims from different brands can differ by a few tenths of a gram, and the count on the tin lid is the number to trust.

Mini pouches

A mini is the smallest pouch made, about 28mm long and light enough that you forget it is there. It sits high under the top lip with no visible bump, which is why people reach for it at work, on a train or anywhere they do not want to be noticed. Because there is less material, a mini releases its nicotine faster and runs out sooner, typically 20 to 30 minutes instead of 45 to 60.

The catch is that "mini" says nothing about strength. FUMI Mini is 4mg and ZYN Mini is 6mg, both gentle tins that suit a beginner. Killa Mini is 16mg, 77 Ghost Mini is 20mg and Pablo Mini is 30mg, all extra strong pouches that happen to be small. Read the mg, not the size. The full list is on our mini nicotine pouches page.

Slim pouches

Slim is the format almost every UK pouch brand uses as its default. It is around 34mm long and narrow, sits flat along the gum under the top lip, and holds enough material to release steadily for 30 to 60 minutes. If a brand does not say what format it is, it is slim.

Slim covers the entire strength range, from ZYN Cool Mint at 1.5mg through VELO and Nordic Spirit at 6mg to 11mg, up to Killa at 16.5mg, Pablo at 50mg and Siberia at 33mg. That is the point of the format: it is the standard shape, so you can compare strengths across brands without a size difference getting in the way. Our slim nicotine pouches page explains what slim means for feel and release.

Large and original pouches

Large pouches, sometimes called original or regular, are the full-size portion carried over from Swedish snus. They are about the same length as a slim but noticeably wider, roughly 0.8g to 1.2g, and they fill the space under the lip rather than tucking into it. More material means a longer, steadier release and a pouch you can feel, which long-term snus users tend to prefer.

They are rare in the UK because the market grew up on slim ZYN, VELO and Nordic Spirit, and British users never got used to the bulk. The main large tins we stock are Siberia All White at 33mg and White Fox Full Charge at 16.5mg, both extra strong. The large and original nicotine pouches page covers who wants them and what to try instead if you do not.

Dry vs moist pouches

Dry and moist describe the water content, not the size, and any size can be either. Moist is the default for most UK tins: ZYN slim, VELO, Nordic Spirit and the standard Pablo and Killa ranges all hold enough water that the nicotine and flavour start releasing within a minute or two. They hit faster, drip more and fade sooner.

Dry pouches, such as Pablo Dry, Killa Dry, CUBA Cold Dry and the ZYN Mini range, carry much less water. They start slowly, sometimes with a dry, scratchy feel for the first minute, then release steadily for longer with far less drip. They also keep better once a tin is open. The same mg in a dry and a moist pouch delivers a different curve, and our dry vs moist nicotine pouches page sets the two side by side.

How format changes the hit

Three things shift when you change format, even at the same strength.

  1. Speed. Moist and small pouches release faster. A 6mg moist slim feels stronger in the first ten minutes than a 6mg dry mini, even though the total nicotine is identical.
  2. Duration. Large and dry pouches last longest, minis shortest. If a pouch always seems to die after 20 minutes, you are probably using a mini or a very moist slim.
  3. Fit. A slim tucks in; a large fills; a mini vanishes. Fit decides whether you can talk comfortably and whether anyone can tell.

Strength labels add a wrinkle. Most UK tins print mg per pouch, so a 6mg mini and a 6mg slim contain the same nicotine in different amounts of fleece. Some Scandinavian tins print mg per gram, which makes a small pouch look weaker than it is. Our guide to mg per pouch vs mg per gram shows how to convert between the two before you compare.

Which format should you pick

  • New to pouches: a slim or mini at 6mg or under. Slim if you want it to last, mini if you want it hidden. Avoid dry formats until you know what a moist pouch feels like.
  • Using pouches at work or in meetings: mini, or a dry slim. Both sit flat and drip little.
  • Switching from snus: large, or a dry slim from Siberia or White Fox, which comes closest to the snus feel.
  • Finding pouches too wet or too short-lived: try the dry version of the same brand before you go up a strength. Pablo and Killa both sell their main flavours in moist, dry and mini, which makes them useful for testing.
  • Wanting the longest session: a large or a dry slim in the strength you already use.

Frequently asked questions

Does format change the nicotine strength?

No. A 6mg mini and a 6mg slim both contain 6mg of nicotine. The mini releases it faster and runs out sooner because there is less material, so it can feel sharper at the start and shorter overall.

What format are most UK nicotine pouches?

Slim. ZYN, VELO, Nordic Spirit, Pablo, Killa, White Fox and nearly every other brand use slim as the default, and tins usually hold 20 pouches.

How many pouches are in a tin?

Usually 20 for a slim. Minis range from 15 to 20 and large pouches from 15 to 24 depending on the brand. The number is printed on the tin lid or base.

Are mini pouches better for beginners?

Often, yes, but only if the strength is low too. A 6mg ZYN Mini or 4mg FUMI Mini is a gentle start. A 30mg Pablo Mini is not, however small it is.

Should I try a dry pouch?

If you find moist pouches drip too much, lose flavour fast or burn at the start, a dry version of the same brand is worth one tin. If you like a quick, obvious hit, stay moist.
