Quick answer: Spearmint is the softer, sweeter mint, with less bite than peppermint and almost no cooling. It runs from ZYN Spearmint at 1.5mg to Killa Spearmint Extra Strong at 16.5mg, and FUMI Spearmint at 11mg for 99p is the value pick. Choose it if cool mint feels too sharp.

Spearmint is a smaller family than cool mint, about 14 tins against 90, but it has a loyal following for a simple reason. Peppermint and frosted mints are built around intensity. Spearmint is built around comfort, and for a lot of people that is what makes a pouch they can use all day.

What spearmint pouches taste like

Think of the difference between a spearmint chewing gum and an extra strong mint. Spearmint is rounder, greener and sweeter, with a mild herbal edge and almost none of the throat-catching cold you get from menthol. It does not numb the gum, so you feel the nicotine tingle more directly, which some people prefer and some do not.

Within the family there is still a spread. ZYN Spearmint and Nordic Spirit Spearmint are clean and lightly sweet. FUMI Spearmint and Pablo Silver Edition Spearmint are sweeter and more candy-like. Koldnic Spearmint Ice and CUBA Ice Spearmint add a cooling agent, so they sit halfway between this page and menthol and ice pouches. If you want to compare it with the sharper end of the family, read the mint pouches page alongside this one.

How spearmint pouches are made

The base is the same as every other tobacco-free pouch: plant fibre, nicotine, water, a pH adjuster and sweetener. The flavour is spearmint oil or a food-grade spearmint flavouring. The key chemical difference from peppermint is that spearmint oil is mostly carvone rather than menthol, which is why it tastes sweet and herbal instead of cold.

That also explains the lack of cooling. There is no menthol to trigger the cold receptors in your mouth, so unless the maker adds a separate cooling agent (as in the "ice" versions), a spearmint pouch feels warm and gentle. Flavour release follows the pouch moisture: FUMI and Pablo are moist and open up fast, while ZYN and Nordic Spirit are drier and build more slowly.

Best spearmint pouches by strength

Low (up to 6mg). This is where spearmint is strongest as a category. ZYN Spearmint at 1.5mg is one of the mildest pouches sold in the UK. VELO Bright Spearmint and FUMI Mini Spearmint at 4mg, and Nordic Spirit Spearmint and XQS Spearmint at 6mg, give you five good tins in the low band alone.

Medium (6mg to 9mg). FUMI Spearmint 8mg and Denssi Spearmint 8mg are the two to try. Both are moist, sweet and quick to release, which suits someone stepping up from a 4mg or 6mg tin.

Strong (9mg to 12mg). Pablo Silver Edition Spearmint 10mg is the best made spearmint in the strong band, and Pixx Spearmint 10mg is the alternative. FUMI Spearmint 11mg at 99p is the one most people end up buying in bulk.

Extra strong (12mg and up). Choice thins out here because spearmint and heavy nicotine do not pair naturally. Killa Spearmint Extra Strong 16.5mg is the main option, with CUBA Ice Spearmint 16mg if you want cooling. Both belong in the extra strong band and neither is a first tin.

Who spearmint suits

Spearmint suits beginners more than any other flavour. It is sweet enough to be pleasant, familiar enough not to surprise anyone, and it comes in the lowest strengths on the market. If someone asks us which flavour to start on and they do not already know, this is usually the answer.

It also suits people who found cool mint or peppermint too harsh, users with sensitive gums who want to avoid menthol, and anyone who wants a pouch that does not announce itself on the breath the way an icy mint does.

It is less good for people switching from menthol cigarettes or ice vapes, who tend to miss the cold and drift back to frosted mints within a week. And at the top end, anyone chasing a serious hit will find more choice among Killa and Pablo's cold mints than in spearmint.

Frequently asked questions

Is spearmint weaker than cool mint?

Not in nicotine terms. A 6mg spearmint and a 6mg cool mint deliver the same nicotine. Spearmint feels gentler because there is no menthol cooling to sharpen the tingle, so the same strength can seem milder. Pick your band by the mg on the tin, not by taste.

Which brand makes the best spearmint pouch?

For a clean, mild spearmint, ZYN and Nordic Spirit. For a sweeter, moister one, FUMI and Pablo. FUMI Spearmint is the one we sell most of because the 11mg tin is 99p and the flavour holds up well for the price.

Why is FUMI Spearmint 99p?

FUMI runs permanent promotional pricing on several of its lines, and the spearmint is one of them. It is a full 20 pouch tin, not a sample. The 8mg and the mini versions sit at the standard £4.49.

Does spearmint flavour last as long as mint?

About the same, 20 to 30 minutes of clear flavour before it fades, depending on the pouch. Drier tins like ZYN last a little longer. Moist tins like FUMI and Pablo taste more at first but fade sooner.
